Adjunct Courses for Math Courses:
Math 98 is a 1-unit course taken in conjunction with specific first-year, foundational Math courses at Berkeley (listed below). Students enrolling in Math Adjunct courses at the SLC will find a dynamic learning community of students looking to develop and enhance learning Mathematics. Utilizing the academic content from the course lectures, adjunct courses examine the heightened academic demands of University-level Mathematics while implementing critical study strategies techniques in order to enhance problem-solving skills and promote academic success.
Study Strategies For Success for Freshmen Entering the Sciences, 2 Units P/NP:
This course is designed for first-semester and/or first year Freshmen intending to study Science at Cal.
In this course, students will explore Berkeley's heightened learning demands and de-mystify academic conventions at a Research University while developing a process for learning and studying effectively particularly in foundational, gateway courses (i.e. Chem 1A or Physics 7/8 that introduce students to various science disciplines. This small seminar course also provides students with an opportunity to meet other freshmen who are similarly trying to navigate the foundational, first-year courses while finding an engaged, supportive scholarly community of peers who have interests in common academic trajectories in the Sciences.
Topics of the Course include: Effective Goal Setting and Time management, Critical Reading Strategies, Note taking, Exam Preparation and Test Taking, Critical Writing Strategies, Academic Presentation/Public Speaking, and de-mystifying the academic culture as it relates to self-concept, academic confidence, motivation, and academic success. The reading, assignments, and projects in this 2 unit P/NP seminar course assist Freshmen to reflect on their learning process, implement important study strategies, and identify campus resources to make successful personal and academic transitions to the university.
Study Strategies For Success for Continuing Students, 2 Units P/NP:
This course is designed for Continuing Undergraduates. In this course, undergraduates examine the learning demands and academic conventions across various disciplines and discourse communities at the Research University. To enhance scholarly engagement and active learning in their disciplines, students will examine their prior beliefs about learning in their disciplines, explore the actual discourse conventions and learning demands within and across various disciplines, while developing a learning process that enhances active intellectual engagement.

Education 98/198: To the Capstone and Beyond, Strategies for Success, 2 Units P/NP:
Undertaking a capstone (i.e. senior thesis or honors thesis) or other culminating project marks a transition into a new phase of a student's education. "Capstone" and "capstone-like" projects are characterized by a new type of engagement in the scholarly enterprise that brings with it many unfamiliar expectation and demands. In the case of a research university like UC Berkeley, a capstone project conventionally involves the creation and contribution of new knowledge through inquiry.
This course is designed to help undergraduates effectively meet the many challenges associated with undertaking a significant, culminating capstone or capstone-like scholarly project. Such a transition into active participation in scholarly discourse shares many features with the transiton to upper-division course work and the transition of first year students into the research university itself. Joining a disciplinary or interdisciplinary community involves engaging in unfamiliar ways of thinking, reading and writing, poses considerable affective and motivational challenges, and necessitates their adopting new roles and relationships with respect to faculty and other members of the discourse community of students making this transition as they engage in capstone experiences and in the composing of capstone texts and projects. The course emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and strategies essential to sound inquiry and the preparation of scholarly texts for dissemination in a variety of forms for a variety of audiences. More specifically, students apply their own capstone projects core strategies for: negotiating academic discourse conventions of authors and instructors in relevant disciplines; further developing and utilizing their metacognitive processes; effectively scheduling and managing a project of the magnitude of a capstone; proficiently communicating to a variety of audiences in a variety of genres the insights they have garnered in their work.
Exploring Learning Differences, Strategies for Success for Students
This course is designed to assist freshmen and continuing students with learning disorders in achieving academic and personal success at Cal. Course readings and assignments, combined with individual assessment and consultations establish a process for students to become self-directed, autonomous learners. Students will learn about effective learning and study strategies, increase knowledge about learning disorders (learning disabilities and ADHD), increase knowledge about academic self-concept, personality preferences, and learning styles, and develop campus networks of support.
Other Voices: English 98
Explore the diversity of voices in literature and other media through guest lectures and small discussion sections. In the process, develop and express your own voice, find out more about the experience of your classmates, and get to know the research and interests of a variety of professors and departments on campus.

Writing Workshops:
Students must apply to be in a 1-Unit P/PNP Writing Workshop. Apply online or download an application in PDF format to submit in person. Each workshop is limited to seven students. When your application is accepted, you will receive enrollment instructions for the Reading & Composition course via email.
Craft of Facilitating Course :
The Craft of Facilitating is a semester-long, 2- or 3-unit course for Pass/No Pass credit. Students planning a course and preparing to facilitate earn 2 units. Students who are concurrently facilitating a course receive an additional unit for the time they are spending conducting their own class, and receive 3 units for Craft.
