SLC Academic Positions for Student Staff

Restrictions & Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements for all academic student staff include the following...

  • Students must have received a grade of "B" or better in the course(s) they will tutor (or comparable courses) and should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Students cannot have more than two “Incomplete” grades.
  • Students must be in good academic standing (not on academic probation).
  • Students agree to abide by all University and SLC Policies.
  • Employment/enrollment commitment is on a semester basis.
  • Eligibility for re-hire is contingent upon satisfactory completion of position responsibilities, student evaluations and supervisor’s assessment of performance. Feedback on performance is ongoing, but at minimum will be provided at the end-of-semester conferences with the supervisor.
  • All tutoring and mentoring take place in the Chavez Student Center during regular SLC hours unless approved in advance by the program supervisor.

Common Expectations of SLC Academic Student Staff

All SLC academic staff...

  • draw on a theoretical framework which values collaboration and students’ experience and autonomy to promote students' academic success;
  • assess students’ strengths, abilities and academic needs, and provide customized assistance tailored to the individual student and/or group;
  • incorporate a variety of teaching methods to strengthen students’ understanding of course material and provide them with approaches to working more successfully within their specific discipline/area;
  • consult with their SLC supervisor, and make referrals to other SLC staff and other campus units where appropriate;
  • participate in orientations, training seminars and other professional development activities;
  • remain current with the demands of the academic area in which they are tutoring;
  • work as part of a team of tutors to develop and promote the SLC tutoring program through meetings with course instructors and other outreach activities (creating informational handouts and other materials, making announcements to classes and student groups, and assisting in workshops for departmental teaching staff);
  • complete weekly records of their time and student contact;
  • follow University and Student Learning Center policies;
  • arrive on-time and prepared for scheduled meetings and activities;
  • interact with students in a friendly and professional manner;
  • provide formal and informal program feedback to supervisors.
