Financial Aid

Applying for Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for eligible scholars who complete a FAFSA or Dream Act application for both 2015-16 and 2016-17. Scholars are urged to complete financial aid applications for both award years as early as possible to allow their conditional Bridge package to be calculated sooner. Final deadline to apply for summer financial aid is May 1.

The following tutorials and guidelines are useful to ensure that the FAFSA or Dream Act applications are completed correctly.

Types of Financial Aid

Types of summer aid may include Federal Pell Grants, Summer Fee Grants, Summer Bridge Grants, Federal Direct Subsidized Loans, Berkeley Loans, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and/or discretionary grants. Types and amounts of aid are based on each scholar's FAFSA or Dream Act application, enrollment, and financial need.

Please note that Cal Grants, Gates Millennium scholarships, Regents' and Chancellors' scholarships, and work-study funds are not available during Bridge.

Summer Aid Offers

Conditional offers can be viewed approximately two weeks after scholars have successfully completed all enrollment steps and all required documents noted on MyFinAid have been submitted and processed. A conditional offer is an estimate of a scholar's financial aid eligibility and is subject to change. Conditional offers are based on a 7-unit placeholder Bridge course, and do not include discretionary grants.

To view a conditional offer:

• Go to MyFinAid and log on with CalNet information
• Select "2015-16" from upper right corner and click "Go"
• Click on "Summer Session," then "Award Details"

Bridge scholars will enroll in actual courses via Tele-BEARS and drop their placeholder course on June 25. Scholars will not see an official award package until the second week of July, provided all required documents on MyFinAid are complete. Scholars with incomplete files will not receive a final financial aid package until their file is complete and they have finalized their enrollment.

Final packages are based on scholars' actual course load (7, 8 or 9 units) and will include any discretionary grants awarded.

Required Documents

Scholars may receive a notification on MyFinAid under "My Documents" or "Messages" that additional materials must be submitted. All forms are included on MyFinAid and/or the Financial Aid website, except as indicated:

• Dependent Verification Form
• Independent Verification Form
• Certification of Independence
• U.S. Citizenship Confirmation
• Eligible Non-Citizen Statement
• Social Security Number Certification
• FAFSA Household Change
• FAFSA Income or Asset Change
• College Enrollment Verification (fill out online on MyFinAid)
• Selective Service Verification (paper version for undocumented scholars)
• Parental Signature Form (download from FAFSA)
• Conditional Offer - Tax Return Not Filed (update through FAFSA or Dream Act)

Please note that a summer financial aid package will not be generated until all required documents have been received and reviewed by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.

Scholars may also see the following messages on MyFinAid for the upcoming aid year (i.e. 2016-17). While these do not prevent an aid offer for summer from being prepared, scholars should make note of these items for future action:

• Admission Process Incomplete - Transcript Not Received
• Cal Grant G-8 Certification Form Required
• Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan
• Parent PLUS Loan Information

Accepting Loans

Scholars may accept loans once they see an official financial aid award package, up until July 24. Go to "Award Details" on MyFinAid and select "accept partial," "accept full" or "decline" from the drop-down next to each loan. In order for the loans to disburse, scholars must also complete loan acceptance requirements (these requirements may be completed prior to July 2).

Contact Cal Student Central to change or cancel the amount of a previously accepted loan.

Outside Scholarships

Scholars can use outside scholarships to help for the cost of Bridge. If a scholar already has a financial aid package and receives an outside scholarship/award, the financial aid offer will be adjusted for that award. Generally, need-based loans are reduced first to "make room" for the scholarship.

Scholars tend to have greater need during the academic year; therefore, it is important that scholars review their 2015-16 (summer) and 2016-17 (academic year) financial aid packages carefully to determine how best to maximize the benefits of their outside scholarships.

Payment

In late June, Bridge fees are assessed through CARS, the central campus billing system. In early July, any financial aid received is automatically applied to each scholar's CARS account. Any outstanding amount is due by August 15 through one of the accepted electronic payment methods. If full payment is not received by this date, CARS adds a $20 late fee per month.
