SLC Chem 3B & 3BL Services: Fall 2008
The SLC offers three types of support for students in Chem 3B/3BL:
Study Groups for Chem 3B
Study Groups meet 2 hours a day, twice each week. In groups, a study group leader coaches the group by reviewing course material, answering questions, working examples to illustrate course concepts, providing worksheets for students to work on together, and helping students develop effective study strategies.
Study groups begin Monday, September 8th. After being assigned a study group, students should attend the first few meetings to hold their spaces. If groups become too large, consistent attendance will be required to remain in the group.
If you want to get on the Waitlist to
join a group or switch groups:
* Everyone who could be placed in a group based on the schedule they submitted was placed in a group.
* All of the study groups for this course are currently filled to capacity.
* DO NOT just attend a group you were not placed in. There is no space right now in any of the rooms for additional people.
* This is different from when you were in 3A because we had 2 more study groups for 3A last spring than we do for 3B now. So I am going to repeat this:
DO NOT just show up at a group.
* If you want to get on the waitlist to join a group or switch groups:
Email Richard Gibson at rgibson@berkeley.edu with "Chem 3B Waitlist " in the subject header. In the email, give your name and SID, indicate if you are already in a group or not, and rank the groups that you want to join.
We will email you as soon as we can place you in a group. There will be enough of you wanting to switch groups, or just deciding not to go that we expect we will be able to get most all of you in a group in the next week or two. But, 3B is very large this semester and we have to manage the size of the groups.
* If you miss both study groups in a week, you will be dropped from the group, and someone else will be added in your place. So, it is very important to make sure you sign the attendance sheet each day.

The SLC provides Drop-in tutoring for all students in 3B and 3BL. Students can come in and talk to a tutor on a first-come, first served basis. The tutors work with students individually or sometimes in small groups, and can answer questions about lectures, course texts, homework problems, sample exams and labs.
No prior signing up is required for Drop-in tutoring. Just come by! Drop-in tutoring is a great way to meet and work with fellow students as well as to get assistance with your course work.
Mock Exams for Chem 3B
Mock Exams occur the weekend before each midterm or final in the course and are typically three hours long. At a Mock Exam, students will be given a practice exam written by the SLC and about an hour to work on it like it was a real exam. Then, tutors will go over the Mock Exam with an emphasis on providing tips on how to approach the real midterm or final.
Mock Exams are designed to assist students in self-assessing their comprehension of the course material and problem solving skills. Answers to Mock Exams are not printed or posted
The SLC Chem 3B Mock Exam for Midterm #1 will be Saturday, September 27 from 9am-noon in 145 Dwinelle.
The SLC Chem 3B Mock Exam for Midterm #2 will be Saturday, November 1 from 9am-noon in 10 Evans.
