Chemistry P for Fall 2008

What is Chemistry P?

Chemistry P is a course taught in the Student Learning Center that is designed to prepare students to take Chem 1A the following semester.

Chem 1A is an introductory Chemistry course. Why would I want Chem P?

Although Chem 1A is a beginning course, it is generally taught with the idea that the students have not only had high school chemistry, but also that they have retained much of that material. As a result, it is often hard for students that either don't have a strong chemistry background or just don't remember their high school chemistry well to do as well in the class as they would like. About 90 students choose to take Chem P each fall to address this.

The first half of Chem P emphasizes the basics of high school Chemistry that are usually covered very quickly or not at all in Chem 1A. The second half focuses on some of the more difficult topics from Chem 1A. That way, the material won't be so foreign when it's covered in more depth in 1A in the spring. There will be two midterms and a final exam in the class. There won't be any labs.

What time is Chem P offered?

In the Fall Semessters:
There are two lectures for Chem P:
Mondays and Wednesdays 9-10am.
Mondays and Wednesdays 11-noon.
Students can go to different lectures on different days.

Students must also select one of four workshop times to attend weekly:
Fridays 9-10am.
Fridays 10-11am.
Fridays 11-noon.
Fridays 1-2.

In the Summers:
The course is MWThF 9-11:30 and Tuesdays 8-noon during the second 6 week summer session (Session D).

How Do I Sign Up For Chem P?

Fill out the application form and turn it in. You can get the application form by either picking it up from the bulletin board outside 141 Chavez or by downloading it here.

How Many Units Is Chem P Worth?

Chem P is not worth any units so you will need to enroll in at least 13 units worth of classes in addition to it. It will not appear on your transcript.

Because we know that you are taking a full load of classes along with this one, we have designed Chem P to minimize its impact on the rest of your schedule. At most, there will be one small homework set and some reading each week.

How Do I Know If I Got Into the class?

Students will receive an email about their status in the class.
