What we do

Our staff can help students like you achieve academic success at CAL while maintaining health, balance, and well-being. You can expect guidance in the following areas:

Time Management & Procrastination, Motivation & Goal-setting, Effective Reading Strategies, Exam Preparation and Performance, Lecture Notetaking, Writing and Research, Public Speaking, Studying and Learning, and Campus Resource referrals and information.

Kinds of Support

You can get help for a variety of courses from Peer Mentors, Instructors, and Staff. Here are the kinds of support you can expect:

• individual appointments with professional and student staff
• Education 98 and 198 courses for credit
• Education 97/197 fieldwork units for undergraduates (including Education minors)

Resources for Faculty and Staff

The SLC Study Strategies Resources Program assists students in managing their current and future coursework by introducing appropriate study strategies. Professional staff and trained Peer Mentors connect students with an elaborate array of resources that enhance students' retention and academic success. Services are based on a holistic approach, helping students with a range of courses. Please contact coordinators directly to make referrals.

About the Coordinators

Gonzalo Arrizon and Chaniqua Butscher, both Berkeley grads, coordinate the Study Strategies Program. As course instructors, they assist students through their first semester academic transitions and beyond. They also train a talented team of undergraduate Peer Mentors who are instrumental in supporting student success. Finally, coordinators are available to meet with individual students for consultations. They welcome student referrals from our network of undergraduate colleges and schools, as well as Student Life Advising Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Disabled Students Program, and the Center for Transfer, Reentry, and Student Parents, among other campus units.
