Writing Program | By-Appointment Tutoring for Undergraduates

What are the rules and requirements for using this service?

By-Appointment serves only Undergraduate students working on papers for 1B-level courses or above (1A-level students may NOT use By-Appointment unless they are on the waiting list for an individual tutor. You may request an individual tutor (Not A By-Appointment Tutor) by clicking this link. )

Grad Students: This service is limited to undergraduate students. Graduate students interested in receiving writing support should contact the Graduate Division, 301 Sproul Hall.

Tutors are only available during scheduled hours.

Tutors do NOT read statements of purpose or application essays.

For assistance with statements of purpose or application essays, please go to the Career Center website.

Why would I use the By-Appointment Tutoring Service?

  • To brainstorm ideas for my upcoming paper.
  • To receive feedback on my papers at any stage of the writing process.
  • To ensure ongoing assistance with the tutor with whom I have been working.
  • To discuss planning and organizing my papers.
  • To develop and strengthen my editing skills.

What are the rules and requirements for using this service?

  • Tutors do not read statements of purpose or application essays.

How do I make an appointment?

  • Schedule an appointment up to 2 weeks in advance.You may schedule only ONE appointment per week. Subsequent appointments during the same week will be cancelled. To schedule an appointment, just click on the link below.
  • Provide your name, local phone number, e-mail address, SID, and course.
  • At the time of your appointment, sign-in and wait to meet your tutor at the SLC Reception Desk (next to the statue of Cesar Chávez).
  • Please note that appointments made with less than 24 hours notice are not guaranteed. Plan ahead and schedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance.

What are the hours of service?

Hours of Service:

Monday: 9:00-10:00, 1:00-2:00

Tuesday: 10:00-11:00, 11:00-12:00

Wednesday: 8:00-9:00, 9:00-10:00, 11:00-12:00

Thursday: 11:00-12:00

How do I cancel an appointment?

Appointments must be cancelled AT LEAST 24 hours in advance. To cancel an appointment, click on the link below and follow onscreen directions. Keep in mind that the tutor is scheduling time for you. Cancelling an appointment on the day of an appointment just isn't cool.
