Writing Program | Drop-in Tutoring
What We Do
- Offer drop-in tutoring assistance on all except R & C 1A-level writing courses (unless you are both in an R1A course and on the waiting list for an individual tutor).
We assist students with brainstorming and drafting, argumentation and analysis, structuring and organizing ideas, and honing critical writing strategies.
- Dialogue, exchange ideas, establish goals and expectations
Through dialogue and exchange, we help students develop their essays. We work with students to establish mutual goals and expectations.
- Offer grammar help
We assist students in identifying and addressing grammatical and sentence-level concerns. We model editing approaches and strategies and provide writers with resources and worksheets.
- We encourage students to come in early
We are happy to work with students at any stage in the writing process; however, we encourage students to come to Drop-In early in their composing process. Students and tutors are limited in the work they can do with drafts that are due that day. Students benefit from time to consider the feedback they receive and revise their work.
- Try our best to serve all students waiting for tutoring
If students are waiting for tutoring, we limit a session to 30 minutes. However, if students are not waiting, we can work with a student for a maximum of one hour.
- Work with manageable page limits
Generally, we work with students on papers that are under 6 pages. For longer papers, we address specific sections of the paper or areas of particular concern to the student.
What We Do Not Do
- Proofread or edit.
We are not a proofreading/editing service: we do not make spelling and grammar corrections for students. We can, however, assist students in identifying sentence-level issues and show students effective ways to edit and proofread their own writing.
- Work on statements of purpose/applications/cover letters etc.
We are not experts in helping students with applications, cover letters, resumes, statements of purpose, etc. For free advice and assistance, contact the Career Center.

Meet the Spring 2008 Drop-In and By-Appointment Tutors!

Jennifer Chang
Hi! My name is Jennifer Chang and I’m a third year Business and MCB major. I lived in Taiwan all my life, spoke Chinese and never thought about writing in English until three years ago, when I made this crazy decision to go for college in America. When I was taking College Writing R1A, my tutor in the SLC helped me through the hardest time. Now I’ve become a tutor myself, hoping to learn more about writing with you. I am also a ballroom dance addict outside of SLC. So when you’re fed up by school work, come to the UC Ballroom Dancers team and I can teach you how to ballroom dance!
Melissa Chun
Antoinnae Comeaux
Morgan Cotton
Hello! I'm Morgan, a third year English Major and Creative Writing Minor,
and this is my second semester tutoring at the SLC. When I'm not reading,
writing, or staring at my computer pretending to read or write, you can
find me in my kitchen making fancy five course meals or triple chocolate
brownies. I'm a terrible speller but great with outlines and creatively
re-thinking revisions, so come on by the drop in table and say hi!
Fonda Fan
Hi, my name is Fonda. I am a third-year English major who's unafraid to
talk about papers. This is my second year at the SLC as a writing tutor
and I plan to keep on going till I graduate. Feel free to stop by and chat
about your assignment. Chances are, we can figure something out!
Peter Hagen
Tutoring is my life, and this is my song: I'm a third-year transfer re-entry student English major in my second semester at Cal.
I have a few years of tutoring experience, but I try not to let that get in the way of your work. I believe that tutors are an alien life form, but, like the electric toothbrush, if you don't overuse them they can work to your advantage. It is my ultimate pleasure in life to be there in the SLC or the TRSP collaborating with you while you make discoveries about yourself through the writing process.
And, oh yeah, we can work on your papers, too. See you in the SLC and/or the TRSP!
Luke Iantorno
Hi! I'm Luke Iantorno, and I am a fourth year English major and Philosophy minor. Before transferring to UC Berkeley and joining the SLC as a writing tutor in the spring of 2007, I tutored English and Math for three years at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California. I am a member of the English Undergraduate Association at Cal, and am teaching a decal in Beat poetry. In my spare time, I enjoy writing, hiking, and playing computer games.
Pam Krayenbuhl
Hi, my name is Pam Krayenbuhl and I'm a second-year double major in
Rhetoric and Interdisciplinary Studies [that means I'm creating my own
major-- I'm calling it Global Arts and Culture]. My hobbies and interests
include [but are not limited to!] ballet, poetry, photography, eating, and
sleeping. This is my second semester as a writing tutor here at the SLC
and I'm looking forward to meeting you!
Allison Lahl
Hi! My name is Allison, and this is my second semester as a writing tutor
at the SLC. I'm a fourth year English major and excited (and scared!)
about graduating in May. My two favorite pastimes are reading and writing,
and I'd love to share my passion with you, so be sure to stop by and visit
me sometime!
Caroline Lam
Hello! My name is Caroline Lam and I'm a fourth year English major and
Chinese language minor. I began tutoring at the SLC in January 2007 and am
looking forward to working as a tutor during the fall semester! I enjoy lazy
afternoons, long naps, and 75 degree weather. I am absolutely terrified of
horror films. I also find writing to be incredibly difficult, but I look
forward to tackling the writing process together with you this spring!
Valine Moreno
On a mid-winter day in 1986, Veronica Moreno, a humble, strikingly beautiful woman in her mid-twenties gave birth to her third child. When Veronica laid eyes on her newborn baby for the first time she knew immediately that the child must be named after her favorite amino acid, Valine. Veronica laughed. Few knew of her true occupation. If word got out that she was actually a mad scientist working for the reds, she would lose everything. One day, she knew Valine would come to appreciate her name and perhaps know the truth about her identity. Valine grew up unaware of such things. She grew to love seashells, banana slugs, and writing. She read Dr. Seuss, Marx, Rowling, and Didion. One day she found herself sitting in a spacious room filled with windows and whispers. She was unsure how she got there and unsure where she would go next. Instead of trying to figure it out she opened her backpack and took out a nicely wrapped, homemade sandwich. She ate it happily and smiled at everyone who passed for the rest of the afternoon.
Jennifer Nishizaki
Hi, my name is Jennifer Nishizaki, and I am a third-year English major, Education minor. This is my fourth semester at the SLC and first time doing drop-in tutoring. If I'm not in the SLC, I'm probably eating a cupcake or reading until my eyeballs fall out for my English classes. Hope to see you at drop-in!
Louis Peitzman
Hi! My name is Louis, and I'm a fourth-year English major. This is my
second semester at the SLC, and I'm happy to be here. I spend most of my
time in Eshlemann helping edit the Arts page of The Daily Californian.
When I'm not doing that, I like reading and attempting to speak Italian. I
look forward to working with you on your paper!
Ariel Raz
Ariel Raz was born in January of 1986 in the holy city of Jerusalem.
Immediately after his birth he was placed in a wicker basket by his
brother and sister and sent traveling on a treacherous transatlantic
voyage against the Gulf drift, leading him through the Panama canal and up
the North American coast until he was finally found at the age of five by
an Israeli couple of Neo-Marxist Christian Scientists and raised in the
quaint suburban town of Del Mar, California. Thus at a critical age he was
strangely re-connected with his lost roots, allowing him to grow up
learning about exotic Middle-Eastern foods and with a good understanding
of contemporary Hebrew. He remained in Del Mar for his adolescent and
teenage years, up until to the time he left for college. Now he studies
film.
Martin Sanchez
My name is Martin, and I'm a third-year English major and Music minor.
This is my third semester with the SLC and my second semester doing
drop-in tutoring. One year ago, I staggered into the SLC after
single-handedly saving Chancellor Birgeneau from a pack of ravenous
wolves. Thankfully, a group of kind-hearted writing tutors were on hand
to dress my wounds and give me something warm to drink. They seemed like
a decent bunch, so I decided to stick around, and I've been a writing
tutor ever since. My hobbies include reading, Tae Kwon Do and butchering
60's rock music on my $50 acoustic guitar.
Lisa Wang
Hi! My name's Lisa Wang and I'm a second year here at Berkeley - major still very, very undecided. This will be my second semester tutoring
writing at the SLC, and I'm looking forward to meeting you! I'm an
out-of-stater from Texas, and I speak Mandarin and French. In my spare
time I enjoy good movies, great food, and better company. Feel free to
drop by with your papers and we'll tackle them together!
