Social Science | Overview

What we do

The Student Learning Center (SLC) Social Science Program supports the efforts of students taking courses in and/or pursuing majors in the Social Sciences. The program strives to create a community of scholars who work together to master the demands of a given discipline and support each other in achieving their academic goals.

The Social Sciences Program works together with the Study Strategies and Writing Programs to offer a variety of services. Credit courses and study groups highlight each student's strengths and emphasize collaborative group work and effective study and exam strategies. In addition, students discover and master modes of inquiry, analysis and expression particular to each discipline.

Kinds of Support

Study Groups

  • Study group leaders clarify difficult course material and concepts. Weekly study groups provide opportunities for students to work in small groups to discuss course material.
  • Important note: Study Groups are formed during the early part of the semester. Once formed, participants in the group are asked to consistently attend in order to build on the collaborative process toward success in the course supported.
  • Tentative Study Group List for the Fall 2009 semester: Anthropology 2AC, Ethnic Studies 10AC, Ethnic Studies 20AC, Media Studies 10, Political Science 5, Poltical Science 3, Psychology 1, Sociology 1, Sociology 3AC
  • Tentative Study Group List for the Spring 2010 semester: Anthropology 1,Ethnic Studies 11AC, Ethnic Studies 21AC, History 7B, Political Science 1, Political Science 2, Poltical Science 3, Psychology 1, Sociology 1, Sociology 3AC
