All scholars who will enter the University of California as freshmen must demonstrate their command of the English language by fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR). Scholars who have not already fulfilled it with previous coursework or test scores are required to take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE).
This systemwide exam is administered on the second Saturday of May at testing centers throughout the state of California.
• California residents should receive a letter by mid-April directing them to the test center at which they must take the exam. Scholars who have not received their test location by late April should contact the UC Office of the President. Failure to complete the exam may impact scholars' placement in appropriate Bridge courses.
There is a $110 fee for the AWPE. The fee will be waived or reduced for scholars who received a waiver of the UC admission application fee. Complete payment or waiver through AWPE.
Results of the exam will be available in mid-June.
• Scholars who have fulfilled the ELWR requirement or who pass the AWPE are eligible to take Bridge courses that fulfill the first half of the Reading & Composition requirement.
• Scholars who do not pass the AWPE may be placed in a Bridge course that prepares them to take College Writing R1A in the academic year.
