About the SLC

Welcome

Our services are designed to support writers at all stages of the writing process. Whatever written assignment you have—a response paper, a report, a literary essay, or a research project—we invite you to visit us early and often. You don't have to have a complete draft to work with a tutor. Bring a prompt, a rough idea, or just reading notes, and we will work with you to build a solid foundation for your paper. Explore our three main forms of services below: Appointment, Drop-in, and Weekly. Additionally, select Workshops and RRR Week Writing Retreat services will return post Spring Break 2023.

Appointment Tutoring

About this Service

Schedule a 50-minute in-person or virtual Writing Tutoring Appointment in advance or same-day to discuss your work in depth with a peer tutor. This format is ideal for writers who are looking for tools to solidify their ideas and refine their prose.

Summer 2023 Service: Full Appointment Service returns Tuesday, June 20th, 2023. Check back Friday, June 15th for service specific hours of operation.

How to Make an Appointment

Our appointment service requires a one-time registration. Once an account is created, you will be able to make, modify, or cancel an appointment with the click of a button. If you already have an account, simply proceed to Make an Appointment. You will be prompted to choose in-person or virtual upon booking your appointment. Make sure to read the instructions on the site and appointment dialog box to ensure you are able to book a slot.

Service Location: For in-person sessions, visit the Vèvè Writing Lounge located in the César Chávez Atrium (entrance located in lower Sproul). For virtual sessions, log on to the Virtual VèVè Writing Lounge (<— Zoom link).

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so at least 2 hours in advance. Cancellations made less than 2 hours in advance are considered late. Two late cancellations or no-shows in a month may result in your tutoring privilege being suspended for the remainder of the semester.

Drop-in Tutoring

About this Service

Writers can visit us for a 30-minute in-person or virtual session with a peer tutor to discuss strategies for strengthening their paper. This format is particularly ideal for writers who are seeking focused feedback on specific aspects of their essay.

Summer 2023 Service: Check back Friday, June 15th for service specific hours of operation.

How to Visit Us

No prior scheduling is required.

To get started in-person:

  • Visit the Vèvè Writing Lounge located on the 1st floor the César Chávez Atrium (entrance located in lower Sproul).
  • Complete the sign-in form (will be shared by the Program Ambassador at the sign-in table).
  • Wait for our Ambassador to connect you with one of our friendly tutors.

To get started virtually:

  • Log on to the Virtual VèVè Writing Lounge (<— Zoom link)
  • Complete the sign-in form (will be shared by the Program Ambassador).
  • A Program Ambassador will connect you with one of our friendly tutors.

Weekly Tutoring

About this Service

Weekly Tutoring offers in-person or virtual one-on-one writing support for student writers enrolled in any academic course at Cal. Writers meet with their tutors on a weekly basis—for 50-minutes—to practice writing as a process. This format is ideal for writers who wish to gain deeper insight into the U.S. academic writing conventions and who understand that "good" writing is a practiced and learnable set of skills.

Hours of Operation

Service returns Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 for summer service. Our hours are as follows:

How to Sign up

Summer 2023 Service:

  • Full Weekly Service returns Tuesday, June 20th, 2023. Check back Friday, June 15th for service specific hours of operation and instructions.

*Orientations are offered on a rolling basis throughout the Fall/Spring/Summer semester. All listed times are PST/PDT. Dates for the upcoming week are updated every Sunday by 6PM (PST/PDT).

RRR Week Writing Retreat

UPDATE: Returning this Fall 2023. Please visit us in Drop-in or book an Appointment to take advantage of this semester's RRR Week services. We also invite you to come write and study in the atrium of the César Chávez Student Center, where the VèVè Writing Lounge is located. There are spacious tables available for your use throughout our open hours and plenty of peers to work alongside.
