SPEAR Academy

SPEAR is a holistic six-week summer program designed to foster the academic, mental, and physical development of middle school students. Through our rigorous curriculum, students will practice the skills and mindset necessary for academic success. They will take courses in mathematics, science, writing, foreign languages, and will foster a body-mind connection through practicing dance, yoga, martial arts and other activities. Overall, SPEAR scholars will:

• Acquire close reading and critical thinking strategies 
• Develop quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills
• Strengthen academic and physical stamina
• Hone oral and written communication skills
• Expand disciplinary lexicon and academic horizon

Courses

SPEAR scholars are placed in four or five courses. Each course is capped at 12 students.

Entering Sixth Graders

• Introduction to Literature

• Pre-Algebra

• Critical Reading and Study Strategies

• Physical and Mental Agility (e.g. yoga, martial arts, art, dance etc.)

Entering Seventh Graders

• Algebra

• Introduction to Biological and Physical Sciences

• American Literature

• Physical and Mental Agility (e.g. yoga, martial arts, art, dance, etc.)

Entering Eighth Graders

• Algebra and Geometry

• Composition and Literature

• Introduction to Chinese, Spanish or French 

• Social Sciences (e.g. history, economics, psychology, political science, sociology)

• Physical and Mental Agility (e.g. yoga, martial arts, art, dance, etc.)

Schedule and Location

SPEAR takes place on the UC Berkeley campus from June 19-July 28, 2017. Courses are from 9AM-4PM M-F

Instructors

All SPEAR instructors have at least three years of teaching experience, practice a student-centered pedagogy, and are committed to bringing out the best in young scholars. They possess at least a teaching credential or are certified in a particular field of expertise. A majority of them hold an M.A. or Ph.D. in an academic discipline.

Fees

The cost1 of the program is $3,000 (equivalent to $500/week at 7 hours/day), plus a $50 non-refundable application fee. Tuition includes all academic materials (e.g. books, journals, lab and art supplies). In addition, free extended care will be available to students upon request. Extended care hours are from 8-9AM and 5-6PM.

UCB faculty and staff are eligible to receive a 25% discount on tuition.

Tuition Payment

Once your scholar is admitted, a deposit of $1,000 is required to secure their space in the program. You will have two weeks from the date of the acceptance letter to pay your deposit. All payments must be in the form of a cashier’s check made to “UC Regents.” The balance of your scholar's tuition must be paid by June 16th, 2017. 

You may choose the option of paying in installments, as follows:

Refund Policy

The application fee is non-refundable. Accepted and registered students may cancel their registration by April 21st, minus a $100 cancellation fee. Cancellations made after April 21st are not eligible for a refund. Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing.

When is the application period?

Applications are accepted from February 1st to March 31st, 2017. Click here to download an application

Who can apply?

Students entering the sixth, seventh, or eighth grades in Fall 2017 with a B average or better are eligible to apply.

What is the application process?

Submit a completed 2016 application, a copy of your scholar's academic transcript, a letter of recommendation from an academic reference, and an application fee of $50. An interview may be required to further assess your scholar's interest and readiness for the rigor of the program. Admissions decisions will be announced by April 14th, 2017. 

How do I secure a space for my scholar once admitted?

Scholarship

A limited number of partial scholarships is available on a first-come first-serve basis until all dollars are allocated. Parents will need to complete a scholarship application and provide copies of their 2015 and 2016 income tax returns for consideration.
