Writing Tutor Application

Qualifications, Requirements, & Responsibilities

Eligibility

  • Must have fulfilled R&C requirement
  • Must be available in-person
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • No more than two “Incomplete” grades
  • Not on academic probation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Alignment with SLC Core Values
  • Strong enthusiasm for engaging with peers in a learning setting

  • Ability to engage in reflective practice
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and sense of responsibility
  • Satisfactory completion of application

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for writing and the learning process
  • Desire to grow as a writer and budding professional
  • Strong interest in collaborative learning models
  • Strong understanding of US academic writing conventions
  • Strong interest in serving the writing community at Cal
  • Experience working with peers from diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Experience using SLC Writing Program services

Program Requirements for Selected Candidates

  •  Attend weekly seminar, scheduled for Wednesdays 4-6PM (starting week 1 of instruction--pending hiring)
  • Commit to a package of 0-10 hours/week (may increase during midterm/paper seasons), between the hours of 11AM-6PM Monday through Friday, contingent on practicum & service schedule
  • Must be available and in-person, January 20, 2026 - May 15, 2025.

*Note: Students may not be employed by the University more than 50% time during the fall or spring semester in any combination of titles. Students may work up to 100% time during the summer and during the winter break.

Responsibilities 

  • Attend weekly seminar 
  • Prepare for weekly seminar
  • Provide individual tutoring
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming learning environment
  • Perform other tasks as assigned: Observations of the services, meeting with more experienced tutors, work performance conference(s), event planning/coordination, data entry, workshop facilitation and preparation, presentations, and support for professional staff, as needed

Application Procedure

Materials Required

  • General Applicant Information
  • Short responses
  • Program-specific supplemental material:  An academic writing sample from a university-level course or equivalent (research paper preferred)
  • Current academic transcript (unofficial accepted); please include verification that you satisified the R&C Requirement (Note: If it is not visible on your unofficial transcripts, we require you to submit your Academic Progress Report which can be download from CalCentral.)
  • Faculty/Advisor Recommendation Form (must be submitted by the end of the third week of instruction or your first day of work, whichever comes first)

Process

  • Submit a separate application for each position and each program
  • Request a faculty/advisor recommendation for each position and each program (must be submitted by the first day of service)
  • Candidates who submit a complete application and who satisfy the minimum qualifications and program requirements will be invited for an interview
  • Candidates are notified of the results of their applications in writing within three weeks of their interviews

Program Ambassador Application

  • Strong enthusiasm for engaging with peers in a learning setting

  • Experience working with peers and staff from diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and sense of responsibility
  • Experience using Google Suite, especially Google Documents & Sheets, & Zoom platform or comparable technology
  • Satisfactory completion of application

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interest in serving the writing community at Cal
  • Strong interest in representing the Student Learning Center
  • Passion for the learning process
  • Desire to grow as a learner and a budding professional
  • Experience using SLC Writing Program services
  • Knowledge of the writing requirements and expectations at Cal
  • Has supported the SLC Writing Program as a tutor

Responsibilities

  • Foster a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for writers and visitors in the in-person & virtual Vèvè Writing Lounge
  • Greet and guide writers through the sign-in process and to the appropriate service/session
  • Support with virtual or in-person Vèvè Writing Lounge management during service hours: Set-up/Breakdown, attend to service/tutor related questions & concerns for lounge visitors, assist in keeping lounge accessible and organized, & take note of trends/patterns with writers & tutors
  • Prepare for and attend weekly team meetings, starting week 1 of instruction, Mondays 5-6:30PM.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed, including but not limited to: assisting with usage data maintenance, social media maintenance, outreach roster/listserv maintenance, program drive maintenance, program resource maintenance, and providing support to program professional staff, as needed

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to commit to an average of 10 hours/week, between the hours of 11AM-6PM, Monday-Friday.
  • Must be available and in-person starting week 2 of Spring 2026.
  • Attend weekly in-person team meetings, Mondays 5-6:30 PM starting Week 1 of instruction
  • Must be available and in-person, January 20, 2026 - May 15, 2026.

Compensation

  • All positions start at $21.36/hour

Peer Coordinator Application

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Proficient in using Google Suite, especially Google Documents & Sheets
  • Passion for writing and the learning process
  • Strong interest in serving the writing community at Cal
  • Strong understanding of US college writing conventions
  • Desire to grow as a writer and budding professional
  • Takes initiative and welcomes constructive feedback
  • Willingness to engage in reflective practice
  • Experience working with peers from diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Attentive to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Team player with strong collaborative skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Strong creative/artistic skills
  • Proficiency in Canva and/or Photoshop

Responsibilities

  • Assist with data compilation and organization
  • Assist in creating and distributing (some) Social Media materials
  • Assist in event planning/coordination
  • Assist with daily, direct service coordination and maintenance
  • Assist in tutor recruitment and hiring, as needed
  • Assist with workshop facilitation, as needed
  • Attend team meetings and training seminars, as needed
  • Coordinate and facilitate Weekly Orientations and class announcements
  • Meet with student writers one-to-one and/or in groups, as needed
  • Provide additional support to professional staff, as needed

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to attend weekly training seminar
    • New Tutor: Wednesdays 5-7PM
    • Continuing Tutor*: Thursday 5-7PM
    • Advanced Tutor**: Fridays, 12-1PM
  • Must be able to commit 35-40 hours/week, primarily Monday-Friday 10AM-7PM

NoteStudents may not be employed by the University more than 50% time during the fall or spring semester in any combination of titles. Students may work up to 100% time during the summer and during the winter break.

*Continuing Tutors (CTs) have one semester of experience in the Writing Program and attend CT seminar.
**Advanced Tutors (ATs) have two or more semesters of experience in the Writing Program and attend AT seminar.
