Writing Program | Overview

What We Do

The SLC Writing Program works under the assumption that all writers, regardless of their experience and abilities, benefit from informed, individualized, and personal feedback on their writing. The program is staffed by professional educators and trained peer tutors who work with writers engaged in any stage of the writing process - from brainstorming paper topics, to formulating and organizing arguments, to developing editing skills. While tutors will not "proofread" students' papers, they will help students learn to address issues of style, syntax, grammar, and usage in their writing. Tutors are trained to work with non-native speakers of English and with writers from a variety of disciplines.

Kinds of Support & How to Sign Up

The Writing Program offers support in a number of formats: Individual Weekly Tutoring for students enrolled in College Writing 1A and other Reading and Composition (R&C) courses, and By-Appointment and Drop-In tutoring for students taking 1B level courses and above. To find out about each format and how to register for the format of your choice, please click on the links below:

Resources for Faculty and Staff

The Student Learning Center offers resources for Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Student Instructors. SLC Writing Program Coordinators are available at Faculty request to visit GSI meetings and to facilitate in-service training activities. In addition, the SLC offers By-Request Writing and Study Strategies Workshops and maintains a collection of writing-related resources that is available to interested Faculty, Staff, and GSIs. Please contact a Writing Program Coordinator for additional information.

About the Staff

The Student Learning Center Writing Program staff is comprised of approximately sixty advanced undergraduates and two professional educators. All of our tutors attend weekly training seminars where they learn various tutoring techniques and discuss specific tutoring situations.
