Math and Statistics | Overview

What we do

The Mathematics and Statistics Program offers support for primarily lower division classes in math and stat. We encourage students to work together to achieve academic success.

Kinds of Support

The SLC Mathematics and Statistics Program offers academic support in several formats.

  • Adjunct Courses
Math 98 and Stat 98 is a 1-unit course taken in conjunction with one of the following lecture courses, Math 1A, 16A, 32, or Stat 2. The adjunct instructor integrates academic content from the lecture with study strategies techniques in order to improve problem solving skills, develop self-management and study strategies, and promote academic success.
  • Study Groups
The study group leader facilitates students working together on worksheets and discussing material in small groups. The study group leader also summarizes key concepts, reviews for the lecture exams, and addresses individual questions during office hours. Study Groups support the following courses:
    Math 1A, 1B, 32, 53, 54 and Stat 2, 21, 134
  • Exam Reviews
We offer a review before a lecture midterm. The reviewer summarizes the important topics and gives a practice exam for students to self-assess their comprehension of the course material and problem solving skills. Exam Reviews support the following courses:
    Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54 and Stat 2, 21, 134
  • Drop-In Tutoring
Students can get help on their homework assignments on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-In tutoring is designed for students who need specific help on a given concept or problem set. Tutors assist students by providing a conceptual framework and creating parallel problems to the homework questions that students bring. Typically there are 8 to 10 tutors working per hour, and we work with students individually or in small groups. Drop-In Tutoring is a great way to meet and work with fellow students as well as to get assistance with your coursework. Drop-In Tutoring is provided for the following courses:
    Math 1AB, 16AB, 32, 53, 54 and Stat 2, 20, 21, 25, 131A, 134

How to Sign Up

Go to each course page to find the schedule of the Adjunct course, Study Group, or Exam Review. Not every format is available for every course.

  • Adjunct Courses
Students must enroll or be on the waiting list of the lecture that the adjunct course is supporting. To add the adjunct course, attend the first class meeting of the adjunct course, and the instructor will distribute the course control number (CCN). Students can enroll in the adjunct course through Telebears. Enrollment is limited to 25 students, so students that attend the first session are more likely to get into the adjunct course.
  • Study Groups
Study Groups begin the 3rd week of instructions and continue until the end of instructions. Most room locations are located in Cesar Chavez. Just attend any session and add your name and SID to the sign-in sheet. Students may attend the study group at any point in the semester.
  • Exam Reviews
Announcements are made in lecture as to when we offer a review. Typically the exam review is given the weekend before a lecture midterm for any course that we support with a study group. All students enrolled in the lecture can attend the exam review (not just those who attend the study group). See the course page for the latest information on room locations and times.
  • Drop-In Tutoring
Drop-In Tutoring starts the 3rd week of instruction and continue until the end of instruction. Students sign up at the Math/Stat Drop-In computer in the Cesar Chavez Atrium by room 103, Our hours are Mon-Thu 9-4 and Fri 9-12.
