Undergraduate Course Facilitator Training & Resources (UCFTR)

What We Do

The Undergraduate Course Facilitator Training & Resources (UCFTR) Program provides support and training to Cal undergraduates who are interested in or currently facilitating a DeCal course. We serve as a campus liaison for students, staff, and faculty with questions regarding student-initiated courses.

Starting Spring 2018, all students seeking to facilitate a student-initiated course for the first time must complete training as required by the Academic Senate. Attending any of our Facilitation & Collaborative Learning Workshops counts toward training and fulfills this requirement. Information Workshops

Wondering how to start a student-facilitated course of your own? Our Information Workshops can help guide you through the process! Workshops are offered several times throughout the semester. Check out our current workshop offerings below.

Important: Starting Spring 2018, all students seeking to facilitate a student-initiated course for the first time must complete training as required by the Academic Senate. Attending an Information Workshop does not fulfill this training requirement. For training offerings, please see our Training Workshops section below.

"Getting Started: The A to Z of Proposing a DeCal": This workshop covers important deadlines, requirements, and policies for undergraduates interested in starting a student-initiated 98/198 course. Sign up to discover best practices for crafting a winning DeCal proposal!

Training Workshops

Looking to sharpen your skills as a facilitator? To discover new ways to effectively manage your classroom? Our Facilitation & Collaborative Learning training workshops will help you do just that! Workshops are offered several times throughout the semester; check out our current offerings below. Attending any of our Facilitation & Collaborative Learning Workshops counts toward training and fulfills this requirement.

"Cultivating Facilitation Habits to Enhance Student Learning": This workshop examines teaching behaviors that hinder student learning and explores strategies for cultivating alternative habits to optimize student success. Note: In preparation for this training, please arrive having read Sondra Napell's brief article "Teaching Tips: Six Common Non-Facilitating Teaching Behaviors," and having completed its accompanying Reflection Activity. Failure to complete and bring in this reflection activity means you will not be able to participate in training.

"Take CARE: Cultivating Effective Communication Skills": Bears That Care and Undergraduate Course Facilitator Training & Resources have teamed up to bring you an additional offering for training! In this workshop, we will explore ways to navigate different communication styles in order to expand our facilitation 'toolkits.' Do something, not nothing—sign up to join the discussion today! For Student Facilitators

Drop-In consultations are available to undergraduates interested in or currently facilitating a student-initiated 98/198 course. Students are welcome to take advantage of these services to ask questions about the course proposal process, to seek feedback on their proposal materials, and more. Individual or group Appointments can also be made separately for those who cannot make our Drop-In times.

Drop-In hours are held weekly* on Tuesdays from 2-3PM in 136 Chavez.

Classroom Observations

Classroom observations are available to undergraduates seeking support or feedback with their facilitation techniques and a constructive perspective on classroom dynamics. To learn more about this service or set up a classroom observation, please contact slc-ucftr@berkeley.edu.
