Chemistry 1A & 1AL

Chemistry 1A/1AL Drop-in Services

By actively engaging students in the learning process, Chem 1A/1AL drop-in services support Cal undergraduates in enhancing their understanding of General Chemistry. By collaborating with each other and peer tutors, students clarify concepts, hone their problem-solving skills, and bolster their confidence with the material. We welcome any and all questions related to course lectures and texts, labs, homework problems, and practice exams. In drop-in, students will foster connections not only with chemistry concepts, but with a supportive community in which they can thrive as learners.

General service hours during the regular academic year are 10AM-4PM Monday through Friday, beginning the third week of instruction. To view SLC Chem 1A/1AL service hours, please visit our live weekly drop-in schedule.

Advanced registration is not required! Students are welcome to visit the Science Drop-in Area on the 2nd floor of the César Chávez Student Center anytime during service hours.

Chemistry 1A Study Groups

Study groups provide an inclusive and problem-based learning environment where students connect with one another to master Chem 1A. These weekly sessions shrink lectures down to intimate groups that promote meaningful engagement with the material. Guided by a peer facilitator, students discuss class concepts, collaborate to solve problems, and engage in reflective practice to enhance their understanding of the subject matter. They also cultivate effective strategies to bolster their science learning toolkit. Students who participate in study group form a support network and deepen their understanding for long-term success in the sciences.

Study groups meet weekly for two hours throughout the semester, beginning the third week of instruction. To view session dates and times, please visit our live study group schedule.

To ensure an intimate learning environment where all members can actively engage, each study group accommodates up to 25 students. Thus, advanced registration is required to join. Acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis and students are encouraged to sign up early in the semester. Students who sign up for a study group that no longer has available seats will be added to the waitlist for that session. If seats become available, waitlisted students will be notified and given the option to join.

Attendance Policy

Please note that although participation in a SLC Science study group is voluntary, students must commit to attending regularly. Members who have two consecutive absences or three total absences will be dropped from the study group. Students may not rejoin the same study group from which they were dropped; they must sign up to join or be added to the waitlist for a different study group.

Chemistry 1A Exam Reviews

Exam reviews are offered at critical points in the semester to support students in strengthening their problem-solving skills and mastery of Chem 1A. Guided by peer facilitators, students collaborate to solve practice problems and review key concepts. Exam reviews provide an opportunity for students to assess their knowledge and identify gaps in their understanding prior to a midterm or final. Students who attend exam reviews build camaraderie and support one another in strategizing for success.
