2024 Lucheta-Vaterlaus Scholars Program Application Details

Overview

The Lucheta-Vaterlaus Scholars Program (LVSP) is an academic research program with a deep commitment to undergraduate scholarship, educational equity, and social transformation. The program is reserved for students of Summer Bridge.

Benefits of the program include:

  • The opportunity to cultivate your research identity and engage in the research process early on in your undergraduate journey 
  • An ability to learn the research process
  • Engagement in collaborative research learning, including academic coaching and mentorship by learning specialists with subject-matter expertise
  • Membership in a tight-knit, residential community supported by the Student Learning Center’s professional staff 
  • A Lucehta-Vaterlaus Scholars Stipend of $3000 and food and lodging during eight weeks of Summer Session 2024

Eligibility

  • Complete Summer Bridge 2023 and a full academic semester (Fall 2023)

  • Hold a minimum GPA of 3.3 at the end of the Fall 2023 semester

Program Commitments

Lucheta-Vaterlaus Scholars must:

  • Successfully complete the 15-week Foundations of Research seminar during the Spring 2024 semester  

    • LV Scholars must attend one seminar session per week, on either Thursdays, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, or on Fridays, 12:00pm to 2:00pm.
  • Devote 40 hours per week for 8 weeks during the 2024 Summer Session C in order to conduct and complete an original research project and write a 15 to 20-page research paper

  • Live on campus with Summer Bridge for the 8-week duration of 2024 Summer Session C

  • Present their Research Project - Fall 2024 semester

During 8 weeks of Summer Session 2024, Lucheta-Vaterlaus Scholars are expected to devote themselves to the program full-time. Thus, they must be prepared to forgo additional obligations, such as summer employment, internships, externships, or enrollment in Summer Sessions classes.

LV Scholars can expect to spend approximately 40 hours on the program per week, dividing these working hours between seminar meetings, individual writing activities and writing workshops, one-on-one academic coaching sessions, project-related reading and fieldwork, and presentation design. To fully engage in the program, each LV Scholars commitment to this workload must be firm.

Stipend

Each Lucheta-Vaterlaus Scholar will receive food and lodging during 8 weeks of Summer Session 2024. In addition, a stipend of $3,000 will be fully awarded to each LV Scholar upon successful completion of the program. 

Application Requirements

All applicants must submit the following materials in order for the application to be considered complete:

  • Online Application Form
  • Academic Writing Sample
  • Short Answer Questions
  • Program Declaration
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • UC Berkeley transcript (unofficial accepted)

Dates and Deadlines

The online application form and letter of recommendation must be received by Wednesday, November 15, 2023

A shortlist of applicants will be selected and invited to an online interview, beginning Monday, November 27, 2023.

UC Berkeley transcript due Monday, December 18.

Final decisions will be made by Friday, December 22.

Submission Guidelines

All applications MUST be submitted online through our 2024 LVSP Application. As this form will not allow you to save your work-in-progress, we encourage you to develop your responses outside the form and transfer them in when you are ready to submit.
