New Science Tutor Application

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • No more than two "Incomplete" grades
  • Not on academic probation
  • Candidates specializing in the following courses must have completed both lecture and lab components (or equivalents) with a B or higher
    • Biology 1A/1AL
    • Chemistry 1A/1AL, 3A/3AL, 3B/3BL, 32
    • Molecular and Cell Biology 102
    • Physics 8A/8B
  • Candidates specializing in Chemistry 32 must have completed both Chemistry 1A and 1AL (or equivalents) with a B or higher
  • Candidates specializing in Physics 8 must have completed both 8A and 8B (or equivalents) with a B or higher
    • Note that this requirement may be satisfied by completion of Physics 7A, 7B, and 7C.

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly training seminar
  • Prepare for weekly training seminar
  • Provide drop-in support to peers
  • Assist in the preparation, support, and facilitation of exam reviews, as needed
  • Maintain course knowledge by attending weekly cluster meetings and reviewing SLC-provided course notes
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming learning environment
  • Perform other tasks, as assigned: event planning/coordination, data entry, work performance conferences, and general program support, as appropriate

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to commit up to 9 hours/week on average
  • Must be able to attend weekly training seminar on Tuesday from 4-5:30PM, beginning the second week of instruction
  • Must be able to attend weekly cluster meeting, date and time TBA

*NoteStudents may not be employed by the University more than 50% time during the fall or spring semester in any combination of titles. Students may work up to 100% time during the summer and during the winter break.

Qualifications & Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between faculty, cluster, and program staff.
  • Attend scheduled course lectures and record notes that identify key concepts, as well as areas of student confusion.
  • Disseminate lecture notes to ensure the cluster is up-to-date on course material.
  • Support study group facilitators in designing study group worksheets and agendas that reflect course lectures.
  • Provide drop-in support to peers.
  • Support exam review service format by guiding the exam review preparation process.
  • Facilitate weekly cluster meeting to engage with cluster members in keeping abreast of course material.
  • Attend weekly training seminar to explore collaborative peer pedagogy and social issues in science education.
  • Make announcements in lecture to inform students of SLC services throughout the semester.

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to commit up to 15 hours/week
  • Must be able to attend weekly training seminar
    • New Tutor: Tuesday 4-5:30PM
    • Continuing Tutor*: Thursday 4-5:30PM
    • Advanced Tutor**: Wednesday, 4-5PM
  • Must be able to attend weekly cluster meeting, date and time TBA

Pod/Study Group Facilitator Application

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Facilitate two weekly study groups (2-hour sessions, once a week) to support peers enrolled in the course.
  • Collaborate with course liaison and fellow facilitators in designing weekly worksheets and agendas.
  • Utilize cooperative learning activities to foster a community where members actively engage in the learning process.
  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of exam reviews.
  • Attend weekly cluster meeting to engage with other cluster members in keeping abreast of course material.
  • Attend weekly training seminar to explore collaborative peer pedagogy and effective facilitation strategies. 

Please Note:

  • Study group facilitators do not serve as a replacement for instructors/GSIs and thus do not directly teach or lecture.
  • If study group attendance drops below 10 for 2 consecutive weeks, study group hours will be converted to drop-in service hours.

Peer Coordinator Application

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have at least one semester of experience in the SLC Science Program
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Strong interest in serving the science learning community at Cal
  • Experience supporting peers with diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Desire to grow as a science learner and professional

Responsibilities

  • Publish the weekly drop-in schedule and drop-in ambassador assignments
  • Support with program outreach, data entry, and other administrative tasks
  • Check in on weekly cluster meetings
  • Assist with coordinating exam reviews and support occasional weekend sessions
  • Support with maintaining the Drop-in Area
  • Support occasional weekend exam reviews
  • Attend weekly training seminar to explore collaborative peer pedagogy and effective facilitation strategies

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to attend weekly training seminar
    • New Tutor: Tuesday 4-5:30PM
    • Continuing Tutor*: Thursday 4-5:30PM
    • Advanced Tutor**: Wednesday, 4-5PM
  • Must be able to commit 10 hours/week (up to 18 hours during exam weeks)

Program Ambassador Application

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • MUST have work study 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and in writing
  • Experience working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic and responsibility
  • Experience using the Google Suite, especially Google Sheets
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with peers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of science majors at Cal
  • Strong interest in serving the science learning community
  • Strong interest in representing the Student Learning Center
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills
  • Experience designing promotional materials using Photoshop or Canva

Responsibilities

  • Foster a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students and visitors in the Science Drop-in Area 
  • Guide student users to respective areas of service
  • Support with maintaining the Drop-in Area during service hours
  • Attend weekly meetings with program professional staff 
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed, including but not limited to: social media maintenance, usage data maintenance, and providing support to program professional staff

Requirements for Selected Candidates

  • Must be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours/week, between the hours of 10AM-4PM, Monday-Friday
